Most all drivers need to re-assess their attitudes and behaviors when they get behind the wheel. We used to be the safest nation in the world but we have dropped considerably in the last 10 years. It is easy to secure a drivers license (usually by age 16), and difficult to lose. There are unfortunately many examples of drunk drivers still on the road after multiple arrests for their affliction. About 40 % of vehicle crash fatalities are alcohol related. A new phenomena, combining alcohol with prescription drugs , is increasing and may have devastating effects--especially on our teens.
Parents need to more closely monitor teen behaviors and not consider teen drug and alcohol usage as a "right of passage" to adulthood. We need to get serious about this situation now. Every month,we experience the equivalent of a 9/11 on our roads with no real outcry. We tend to accept this ongoing carnage as just something that "comes with the territory." We all can play a role in changing this scenario if we have the willpower and fortitude to follow through.
