 SAFE DRIVING CONSIDERATIONS

Our government would like to totally ban use of cell phones while driving. Talking, texting & email usage has increased dramatically and is directly responsible for many deaths and injuries. The counter argument is such an action is unconstitutional & violates our rights. But do we have the "right" to jeapardize the lives and safety of others? Multi-tasking when driving is not rational. If I cannot handle an incoming call in 10 seconds, I will pull off the road to safe location & return the call. If each of us takes responsibility for our own actions, we can establish healthy, safe driving habits and obviate need for government intervention. Speed driving is reserved for the racetrack. This website offers many ways to improve as well as some sobering statistics regarding our roads and highways.

Most all drivers need to re-assess their attitudes and behaviors when they get behind the wheel. We used to be the safest nation in the world but we have dropped considerably in the last 10 years. It is easy to secure a drivers license (usually by age 16), and difficult to lose. There are unfortunately many examples of drunk drivers still on the road after multiple arrests for their affliction. About 40 % of vehicle crash fatalities are alcohol related. Distracted driving & a new phenomena, combining alcohol with prescription drugs , is increasing and may have devastating effects--especially on our teens.

Parents need to more closely monitor teen behaviors and not consider teen drug and alcohol usage as a "right of passage" to adulthood. We need to get serious about this situation now. Every month,we experience the equivalent of a 9/11 on our roads with no real outcry. We tend to accept this ongoing carnage as just something that "comes with the territory." We all can play a role in changing this scenario if we have the willpower and fortitude to follow through.

SENIOR DRIVERS

There will be rapid growth of the senior driver population as the Baby Boomers generation ages. Seniors are reluctant to stop driving & relinquish their independence. It's quite understandable but sometimes family or friends need to help in assessing the situation. As we age, we experience changes in vision, judgment, muscle strength & flexibility. My book addresses this situation in depth & offers many resources & options for seniors & family members. Check it out.
